The obvious people to provide that corrective are the patient's relatives who, on the basis of protective kinship, are expected to act on the patient's behalf and make decisions when the patient is unable to make them for himself. Relatives may be unreliable and protective kinship a volatile commodity. For, whilst some relatives may wish to protect patients, others may not - preferring to act for other reasons and in other interests. Some relatives, for reasons best known to themselves, may prefer someone else to act on their behalf.

So, the battle lines are drawn. Regrettably those descriptions given above are not hyperbolic but represent statements given time and again by social workers and GPs during my earlier research (Bean, 1980). Indeed the pettiness often meant that the patient was adversely affected by these unseemly squabbles. Behind it all there was, I suspect, something larger lurking, something more important: perhaps even competition for power and status. For, taken at face value, the complaints from both sides were reasonable enough: the GPs complained of a lack of professional deportment from the social workers, who in turn complained of exaggerated self importance in the GPs.
