Engelsman (1968) found that, under short-day conditions, a I-minute burst of red light during the dark period results in an increase in the number of female flowers. However, when red light was replaced by far red, this stimulation was reversed. These and later findings have led to the belief that sex regulation in unisexual plants is controlled (inter alia) by the phytochrome system.
